Missions & Outreach

Our Thoughts on Missions:

Jesus said -
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind,
AND you shall love your neighbor as yourself."

John Wesley's motto was:
"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can,
in all the ways you can, in all the places you can,
to all the people you can, as long as ever you can."

Immanuel UMC is Historically a Missions Oriented Congregation!
Every area, every group is somehow in mission at all times! We support each other's missions feverishly, making everyone here a missionary for Jesus Christ!  Our women's group, WINGS, every Bible Study group has their own missions supported by the entire church and each other, but Immanuel as a whole continues to be in mission constantly.
We strive to see every face as the face of a neighbor and do just what Jesus told us in that great commandment and we've found that not only is it not as hard as it may seem, but it brings a kind of joy only found in doing your best for others.

Our Food Pantry is open every second and fourth Wednesday 9 am - 11 am for people with immediate need.  This is stocked and staffed by volunteers.  If you wish to donate items to the pantry, we are always in need of all canned goods including canned meat, pasta, sauce, juice, cereal, PB & J, soups, prepared dinner boxes, baby formula and diapers, and hygiene products.   Big thanks goes to the US Postal workers for delivering literally tons of food to our pantry in May each year.

Other Missions We Continually Support
You can help with donations of any of the following:

  • Gift Certificates: from Target, Kmart and Meijer for homeless moms at Turning Point to purchase clothes for their children
  • Eye Glasses:  for the Lions Club to refurbish and give to those in need.
  • McDonald's Gift Certificates:  for the MCREST office to be given to homeless who haven't had a recent meal.
  • Gloves & Socks:  For the homeless in need of warmer, drier feet and hands during the winter.
  • Boxtops for Education:  To support a local school for purchases of classroom items.
  • Immanuel also hosts MCREST (Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team) every August housing, feeding and spiritually nurturing the homeless.  Our Christmas offering will support those MCREST.
  • Of course, our church supports UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) which is usually one of the first responders to catastrophic disasters and emergencies such as earthquakes, tornadoes, and starving children in Haiti.
  • One of our favorite outreach events is our presence at the annual Gratiot Cruise - since we are right on Gratiot Avenue, we take the opportunity every year to reach out to the community thru music, children's tattoos and games, handing out free Bibles and water,  and sharing the love of Jesus to all who pass by.
  • Vacation Bible School at Immanuel is open to any child preschool thru 6th grade sponsored by Immanuel's congregation.  This is another highlight of our summer.  We serve children for a week of fun, learning and sharing the love of Jesus.
  • WINGS has their annual marketplace which raises funds for countless missions locally and worldwide including Turning Point, Lighthouse Outreach Center and more needs in our community!

Many hands make light the work
no matter what size the hands may be -
so come work with us, bring your children too!
His burden is light - and His joy is found in abundance!
